Newsletter Auction 167

While two Daytonas were took the limelight in advance, it was the pocket watches that proved to be the most sought after items at Ineichen Auction No. 167. Several 18th century verge escapement pocket watches sold for more than their higher estimates, with some even doubling or tripling their expected prices. One of the unexpected highlight of the sale turned out to be a 1890s carousel pocket watch by Patek-Philippe. The higher estimate of CHF 12’000 was shattered as the hammer came down at CHF 46’000. Expectedly, the two steel-cased, ref. 6239 Rolex Daytonas also surpassed their estimates with the coveted Paul Newman going for CHF 128’000 against a high estimate of CHF 90’000. In table clocks, peculiarity proved to be the key. A 17th century with a wooden movement and hand, an early 19th century marine chronometer in a mahogany case and a delicate gold and enamel clock with a perfume bottle and make up tray all sold above estimate.
